Biography from Thornwood Gallery

Joyce Combs has created a very special situation in the area of oils, handmade paper and mono prints. Joyce is fascinated with the beauty of the aging process and recreates this quality in her art. Her work is often inspired by ancient architecture or architectural detail. The materials she uses to produce the weathered patina surfaces in her work include collage, enamels, oil washes, acrylics, inks, prisma color, oil pastels and charcoal. She stains, hand rubs, waxes, scrapes and varnishes to develop a unique richness of color and textures, sometimes resembling the antiquity of old walls.

Joyce's latest endeavor is in the mono printing process. The process is unique and innovative, creating a special one of a kind image using only water-based media. She calls it her "water color mono print". The image is first made into a mould which is cast in paper. The cast paper is then painted and put through an etching press using 100% rag paper. This is the reverse of an etching as it is raised rather than incised. After the mono print is pulled from the cast paper, it is hand embellished with pastels and metallica for the finishing touches.

Joyce was born in southwestern Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University. She studied at the Giassell Museum School, the academic wing of the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, Texas. She has worked in the field of fine art, primarily in oils, for twenty years before turning her attention to the area of mono prints, collographs and handmade papers. Joyce's work is exhibited internationally in Japan, Australia, London and Canada, as well as in the United States. Her work is published in poster form by Galaxy of Graphics and Arthur Kaplan of New York City.

Please keep in mind that askART is not a promotional site, and accordingly biographical information should not be worded for purposes of 'advertising' an artist.

Our site is about PAINTERS, SCULPTORS, and ILLUSTRATORS. If you do not know a great deal about the artist, but have noteworthy information to share, we would welcome you to send it also to registrar@askart.com. It is rewarding for all of us to see artists' files grow, and others may be eager to supplement what you have provided.

Non-Dealers and Museums:
Please introduce your information as follows: "The following biographical information has been provided by Jane Doe, the niece of the artist."

Dealers and Museums will be automatically credited with a link to their sites.

Just the facts, please. Our editors are trained to delete any hype or advertising verbiage such as “most famous,” “internationally renowned,” “extraordinarily beautiful works.”

If you do not know a great deal about the artist, answer as many of the following questions as you can. Other persons, seeing your entry, often add to the data. This is how many of the biographies grow.

"The artist John Doe is the quintessential master of light, color, and scene. His brilliant canvases are full of feeling, where love can be felt through all the senses. Through his skillful brushwork, and drawing from his life experiences, he creates images where the viewer feels he has truly become one with the subject. Doe's paintings are sure to be sought by the discriminating collector. I/we have numerous spectacular works by Doe available for sale."
